Ferlach 1 is a 2 MW / 5.6 MWh battery storage system near Ferlach in southern Austria, built by Volthein to expand its presence in Central Europe. It strengthens grid stability and supports Austria's shift to renewables by responding quickly to power fluctuations and automatically restoring grid balance. It also optimises energy use through price arbitrage β storing electricity when it is abundant and releasing it during peak demand, reducing the need for conventional generation.
The Site
The project presented a unique engineering challenge: installing heavy battery and inverter hardware into a pre-determined space within an existing EV charging facility for caravans. Roof-construction limits meant that positioning the heavy technology safely required precise team coordination to protect both the building structure and the equipment.
