The Challenge

REPLACING DIESEL WITH A FULLY RENEWABLE ISLAND MICROGRID.

A cluster of islands in Dubai required energy infrastructure built entirely from scratch. Hotel complexes were being constructed with 35 GWh yearly consumption and 24/7 operation — with only 4.5 MW diesel generators as the existing energy source.

Diesel logistics to remote islands are costly, unreliable and ecologically unacceptable. The goal was clear: design a sustainable island microgrid powered entirely by renewable energy — with BESS and hydrogen storage ensuring round-the-clock reliability without any grid connection.

The entire system is operated through an advanced EMS that forecasts production, manages storage dispatch, and optimizes Total Cost of Energy (TCOE).

Volthein designed a multi-layer renewable microgrid combining high-yield solar PV, BESS for daily cycling, hydrogen for multi-day autonomy, and existing diesel generators retained only as last-resort backup — all managed by a single EMS.
